  • Have You Ever Used Hooked on Phonics?

Has anyone used this program? I am considering getting it for the girls and the hooked on math one too. I was wondering how the program works. I do not want to spend that much money if it does not work.

And of course you have to take into consideration that if I do not do it with them the program will not work.

Has any ever used "Hooked on Phonics"? What was your experience like?

  • Blended Families -(Not) Playing Favorites

There's no question about it, blending families is difficult. It takes a lot of effort, communication, and open mindedness to make it work... that is, unless you don't mind life perpetually teetering on the verge of World War III. Personally, I prefer home to be a "Drama Free Zone." And let me tell you, it's not always easy. Keep Reading...

  • Are These Items Really Necessary?

By the time a second, third, or even fourth (or more) child comes along a mom pretty much knows what products are a necessity, and what products can be done without. However, as a first time mom often the questions are endless, and one glance at the overflowing shelves at Babies 'R' Us is enough to leave one's mind buzzing.

First time mom's often fill up their registries with items they "need," simply due to the fact that a friend, of a friend, of a friend (who doesn't even have a child mind you), told them they absolutely had to have such and such an item. So... I've put together a little list below of items that are so often seen on said baby registries, and I thought that all of you Momaroo moms could weigh in on whether or not these items are indeed lifesavers, or simply frivolous pieces that take up much needed space! Or perhaps some of these items have amazing, yet simpler, counterparts that would work just as well! Let's hear your reviews moms. What do you think about:

  • Gluten Free Product Reviews

So since we're going with alternative products in order to deal with this change in diet (read: my carb loving kids need alternatives to the foods they used to eat), I thought I would compile a list of the things we like, and the things we don't.

Mrs. Leeper's tricolor corn rotini - BAD. I don't know why it didn't turn out right, because I followed the instructions to a "T." But yeah, even after only 6 minutes of boiling it was mushy, and very grainy. More Here...
  • Loving The Weather -I Have Spring Fever!

    I have spring fever.

I blame Old Navy and their wonderful $2.50 flip flops. How else can I buy two pairs of shoes for myself in one day and feel absolutely zero guilt? The Dude and I went shopping yesterday, beginning our spring/summer wardrobe and whatnot. I love having a little kid, because I get to buy new clothes for him every season change. I'm a pretty big fan of shopping, so this is just one of the many perks of having a small child in the house.

  • Problems with His Ex and Mom

Ok, I'm new here...but let me start with my rather long story.

I am buying a house and engaged to a wonderful man who is involved in a rather nasty custody dispute. They have been divorced for years, but this summer his ex-wife abducted their child and fled the country.

It has been in the news, in the papers, it's rather messy. It's hard for me, and I feel selfish. his whole life is consumed with this international custody battle, and I'm not sure if she's ever going to come back. If she does come back we are going to be faced with raising his daughter, and I'm pretty sure I'm up to the challenge.

We've talked openly about my fears More Here...

  • A Letter to My Daughter

    10 March 2010

    Hey Kiddo,

It's unbelievable that you are nine years old today.  My goodness, where has the time gone?  I can't begin to tell you how much I miss you today.  This is the first birthday that you have ever spent away from me, but I'm sure that your Daddy is making it a good one for you.  It's good for the two of you to share special days like this.  After I put your little sister down for bed tonight, I got out some of your old baby photos and sifted through them, spreading them out on the floor around me, carefully picking each one up and admiring them.  I smiled, I laughed, I cried... but they were happy tears.  You might think that I'm crazy, but you'll understand one day. • Teaching 5 Year Olds About AIDS

Yesterday I got a letter that was sent home from the principal of Little Miss Spice’s school.

In the letter, it informed me that they were planning to teach my child about the HIV/AIDS virus.

    In it, it said :

    “Dear Parent:

Your child’s teacher will teach your child about the HIV/AIDS Virus this week. The NY State Education Dept. has mandated that AIDS education be provided for ALL students grades K-12…..”

Now, if Little Miss Spice were in grade 12, I wouldn’t think twice. Hell, if she were in junior high I wouldn’t think twice. 6th grade? Wouldn’t think twice.

My thinking twice stems from the fact that my baby girl is 5 years old. Sure, HIV/AIDS education is beneficial and actually vital to our children’s education. But at what age do we proceed with such a topic? What is too soon, and is there an “appropriate” age for AIDs education? More Here...

  • Well, POOP! Two Stories for Your Enjoyment...

Here's a pic of the little rascal in the infamous Bumbo. I'm starting to believe he thinks the Bumbo is a toilet or something because he almost always poos when he sits in it. ...I have a very advanced 4 mo. old!

Ok, so I thought you Momaroos would appreciate two funny poop stories (Note: my DS (darling son) is EBF (exclusively breast fed), so you know how explosive that can be ).

    "Poop and Poop Again"

Ok, so the other day, DS is sitting in his Bumbo when I hear him poo (it is almost always loud). Usually, I wait a few minutes to make sure he is finished, but lately he has been leaking, so I took him to the changing pad almost immediately. Well, I got his diaper off and started to wipe him off, when he decided he wasn't finished yet. I quickly caught the liquid poo in my hand (Oh, the joys of motherhood) and got us both cleaned up again and put on a fresh diaper. More Here...
